Head of Department, dosent, honored teacher of Azerbaijan I.R. Akhmedov
Both nutrition hygiene and communal hygiene departments were established in 1942 and up to 1987 existed as independent departments. In 1987 departments were merged.
The next disciplines like nutrition, dietology and communal hygiene are taught here for students of 3-5 courses according to the curriculum.
Department staff consists of half-part professor, 4 dosents, 1 head teacher and 2 assistants.
The first head of department was D.I.Koghan (1942-1944). In different periods this department was headed by dosent C.R. Nuriev (1944-1968), dosent L.M. Tagizade (1968-1980), dosent Karimov A.K. (1980-1086) and professor Kichibekov B.S. (1986-1987).
The communal hygiene department has conducted many scientific researches on hygienic evaluation of water supply in many areas of the Republic, Sanitarian protection of Mingachevir and Jeyranbatan water regions, processing head plans in rural areas, pollution of the atmosphere air and methods of taking it under control. 5 candidate dissertations were defended and more than 20 scientific articles and consultations were written, At that time a special attention was paid to improving the educational process.
The nutrition hygiene department in first years of its establishment (1942-1946) was headed by the chairman of general hygiene department professor M.M. Efendizade, afterwards it was headed by the head of communal hygiene department, dosent C.R. Nuriev (head of both departments) (1946-1950). In further years the department was headed by dosent A.H. Abdulov (1950-1963 as replacement), by professor A.M. Mammadov, (1964-1965), dosent N.C. Baghirov (1965-1978), professor M.H. Kerimova.
From 1950, by the guidance of dosent A.H. Abdulov several important activities were conducted in direction of the improvement of the department educational program. 20 scientific articles and memorial booklet of nutrition hygiene were issued by the department staff.
From 1964 by the guidance of N.C. Baghirov along with the educational program, the quality of the scientific researches was under attention.
The main directions in scientific activities of the department were study of nutrition of the oil workers, nutrition study of pre-school year children, determination of polyamide used in nutrition industry and its toxic evaluation, researches of microelements in our nutrition.
About 80 scientific articles and memorial booklet of nutrition hygiene, ”Practical training of nutrition hygiene theory”, “Azerbaijan Cure Culinary”, study materials for students and 2 methodical consultations were issued by the department staff, 1 author certificate was obtained, 1 doctorate dissertation was defended (1975, M.H. Kerimova) and 3 candidate dissertations were defended.
In 1978 professor M.H. Kerimova was approved as a department head. From 1987 up to 1999 she headed the merged from two departments “the department of nutrition and communal hygiene”. During her period the educational component of the department was significantly improved, the modern approaches were used and a lot of new educational materials for students like next text books “Food poisoning and prophylactic activities” (N.C. Baghirov, M.H. Kerimova), “Chemical fertilizers, food and fodder additives. Sanitarian and hygienic control of products produced with its applying” (M.H. Kerimova, I.R. Ahmedov) was written. This period could be characterized as absolutely productive in scientific field as well: totally 9 candidate thesis under her guidance and 2 doctoral thesis under her consultation were defended. The thesis were conducted to the next directions of research: nutrition of different social and professional groups, vitamin enrichment of nutrition, stress and nutrition and othr.
After the integration of 2 departments, the new subject of “dietology” was applied as a change in educational program of the department. Therefore, text book of “Dietology” was written and published to improve the education quality. At the same time, study books on seminar training, program-control applications to control the knowledge level of students.
“Nutrition of rural and urban inhabitants, children and teenagers”, “Current nutrition and health condition of the population ”, “Hygienic effect of photooxidant pollution of atmosphere in Baku city”, ”sanitary and hygienic evaluation of labor ability of school-age children” complex researches on this topics were conducted. 3 candidate and 1 doctorate dissertations were defended by these articles.
Since 1999 the department is headed by dosent I.R. Akhmedov.
During this period of time attention on improving the education quality was increased, technical supply of the education was enlarged, multimedia and some other modern systems were successfully applied in education process.
From 2000 - 2005, scientific researches’ direction was “The role of nutrition in improvement of alimentary pathology among different social groups of AzerbaijanRepublic, its application in modern conditions” and from 2006-2010 - “Evaluation of the efficiency iodine deficiency disorders and universal salt iodization program implementation in Azerbaijan”.
Department specialists constantly collaborate as coordinators, experts and consultants with plenty health and international organizations like UNICEF, Asian Development Bank, WHO, WFP, GTZ and othr. Many activities on the problem of Nutrition and micronutrients like “Iodine deficiency disorders/Universal Salt Iodization”, “Vitamin A deficiency”, “Iron deficiency” are successfully conducted by department experts on the national level with the MoH participation and under UNICEF support. The department specialists elaborated various training materials (12 packages), conducted plenty trainings and distributed these training packages for different specialists involved in the problem: the sanitarian quarantine service, customs service, social representatives, medical and educational staff, salt producers and laboratories’ staff. I.R. Akhmedov elaborated governmental normative documents for using by sanitarian control service on the theme of iodized salt control system improvement: “Sanitarian instructions for salt production stuff”, “Monitoring of iodized edible salt”, “Methods of iodine determination in iodized salt ”.
Dosent of the department G.Gadjiyeva prepared methodical materials for students named as “Prophylactic nutrition”, 2005. Some specialists of department, as dosent G.S. Ganiyeva, are master in English. She participated in elaboration of textbook “Hygiene, practical course” 2009 for foreign students in frame of curriculum of Department of General hygiene and ecology.
In the recent period 1 candidate dissertation was defended in the department, 1 doctorate dissertation is finished and 1 doctorate dissertation is under the consideration.
The department professor M.S. Gasimov issued (by the assistance of several department staff members) publications like: “Diet dishes, Azeri culinary” (1995), “Basics of the General Dietology” (1997), “Diet in Azeri culinary” (2004), “Diet against extra body weight and fat diseases” (2004), “Diet nutrition in culinary” (2004), “For the healthy lifestyle” (2005), “Organization of diet nutrition of poor, old people social group”(2006), “To expand knowledge of hygiene among school children” methodical advises(2006), “Sanitary and hygienic instruction for businessmen” (2009).
The head of department takes part in elaboration of minimum food “basket” for different social groups of Azerbaijan population in frame of the MoH task.
Dosent I.R. Akhmedov, dosent G.M. Hadjieva, dosent S.A. Mammadova, assistant I.F. Ramazanova as experts on nutrition take part in various TV programs and give useful information to the population.
The department staff published more than 500 scientific articles, including more than 30 methodical recommendations and consultations.
